60% of Australians* think Delta Goodrem has a great smile!

Having a nice smile makes a huge difference to our appearance – and according to the 2009 PRONAMEL ® National Oral Health Survey, 55% of males and 68% of females said it’s important to have a nice smile.

Interestingly, 35% of Australians have undergone some form of dental cosmetic procedure – whether it’s having a crown, or having their teeth whitened.

Some of the most popular celebrity smiles include Delta Goodrem, Jennifer Hawkins and Nicole Kidman.

Australians and Dentists

Did you know that Australians regard Dentists as their most feared profession?

According to the PRONAMEL® National Oral Health Survey, 36% of Australians regard the dentists as their most feared profession.

7% of Australians say they never visit the dentist for a range of reasons – including that they believe it’s too expensive, they’re scared, they don’t have time, or they don’t believe they need to. Only 39% of people go to the dentist when they have something wrong with them.

Adult Oral health

The PRONAMEL® National Oral Health Survey also revealed some interesting facts about adult oral health in Australia:

41% of people surveyed said their oral health is not as good as they would like it to be. 76% of people said they regard it as ‘really important’ to look after their oral health, but only 44% say they look after their oral health well.

So what are we doing about it?

Interestingly, Australians visit the dentist, on average, 1.4 times per year. We also brush our teeth, on average, 650 times a year (or 1.8 times a day) and 49% of people brush 2-3 times a day or more.

According to the survey, Australians floss their teeth, on average, 171 times a year (or 0.5 times a day) and 26% floss daily or more.

Australians also use mouthwash/rinse on average 159 times a year (or 0.4 times a day) and 25% using mouthwash daily or more.
